A Greater Goal

A Greater Goal shines a spotlight on the incredible athletes of the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team and their long fight for fair treatment and equal pay. More than 250 women have worn the team jersey—and nearly all played a role in pushing for change. This powerful narrative nonfiction book by award‑winning author and journalist Elizabeth Rusch brings their story to young readers with clarity, heart, and inspiration. After Title IX opened doors for girls' sports in 1972, the U.S. Women's National Team rose to global success. But even as they won World Cups and Olympic medals, the players faced unequal pay, poor travel conditions, and limited support. They were expected to win—but not compensated like champions. Through determination, teamwork, and the support of their union and the men's national team, these athletes fought back. Their efforts led to a groundbreaking 2022 contract that secured equal pay and set a new standard for future generations. Filled with player profiles, behind‑the‑scenes stories, and rich backmatter, A Greater Goal highlights the courage, persistence, and unity it takes to stand up for what's right. It's an empowering read for young athletes, sports fans, and anyone who believes in fairness and equality.
